The name Nanty Glo comes from the Welsh phrase "Nant Y Glo" which means "The Ravine of Coal."
Commercial mining launched in 1896 with the opening of "Nanty Glo No. 1" by Dr. James W. Dunwiddie from Pine Flats, Indiana County.
"Lake Heisley," part of a mine water reclamation project, occupies what was once the above-ground operations area of the old Heisley mine.
